The Return of Lightning Lass!
To her combined surprise and relief Ayla survived Mekt's temper tantrum.
But she was far from out of the woods yet.

Ayla headed off to look for help leaving the heros stuck looking for a
way out. As everyone was shackled to power neutralizers it was up to Karate
Kid, the only Legionaire without innate powers, to find a way out. He was
close to giving up as the devices sapped willpower but his wife managed to
restore his spirit.

Karate Kid freed the other Legionaires but died in battle with the
Supervillain leader Nemesis Kid. Nemesis Kid subsequently died at the hands
of a vengeful Projecta who decided her world would stay in limbo free from the
destructive influences contact with high tech cultures were having on its
medieval lifestyle. Meanwhile Ayla discovered her lightning powers had been
restored by Mekt's attack and after defeating her older brother in an
electrical battle rejoined the Legion as Lightning Lass. Her brother had
retired to marry Saturn Girl some time earlier as Legion rules required
members to be single. Don't ask me why.
Ayla relished the return of her original powers and set out to become as
hardassed as Timber Wolf. As I understand in somewhere in there she became
involved fellow legionairess Shrinking Violet who had also ditched her long
time boyfriend. Frankly that always struck me as the writer ditching
continuity in favour of political correctness by creating gay legionaires
which there's nothing wrong with but it would have been more realistic to
bring in new legionaires with those sexual preferences rather than suddenly
switching long standing hetrosexual characters. But I digress, what Ayla's
up to now I have no idea as Legion continuity has become hopelessly muddled
over the past few years. "Zero Hour" claimed to resolve all that but I
suspect it just added to the confusion.
At any rate that concludes the in-depth look at Ayla. Up next it's
Dawnstar.
Dawnstar
Born into a race descended from unidentified Amerind tribes that had used
metahuman genetic modification to give themselves wings (that bestowed flight
abilities in both atmosphere and space) and psychic tracking abilities
Dawnstar was originally a fairly mercenary character having joined the Legion
for the money rather than any sense of idealism. She mellowed over time and
became truly committed to her comrades and to the Legion itself. Case in
point; having crashlanded on an unknown world, colonized by terrans who had
subsequently lost their technology and developed a theocratic society
worshipping a diety named Kol, Dawnstar and Brainiac 5 became separated.
Brainiac 5 hooked up with Spliff, a local holy fool while Dawnstar ran into a
priest of Kol named Jhordan. Without her translator they couldn't understand
one another as the Kolians didn't speak interlac (they spoke a variation of
23rd Century english which Brainiac 5 knew so he could get by) but they still
became mutually attracted. Dawnstar did have a boyfriend in the Legion but
as Wildfire's body was composed of anti-energy it had remained a platonic
relationship with the understanding she might meet someone more physical some
day. However while Jhordan liked her his initiate Ina had other ideas, some
of which seemed fuelled my jealously. There were also other problems standing
in the way of a relationship.
Kol had forbidden technology and that commandment seemed to be more than
myth as natural disasters struck when Brainiac 5 began meddling with his own
equipment and leftovers he found from the time of the colony's founding. To
make matters worse a plague had begun sweeping across the land and it seemed
to coincide with their arrival. To understate it the locals weren't happy
about this and blamed the Legionaires (and Spliff for violating a holy place
and bringing the anger of Kol) and perhaps not without cause as Brainiac 5
explains. Their not quite human physiology didn't help endear them to the
Kolians either and they were proclaimed demons. Which is why the locals
decided a good old fashioned demon exorcism was called for via the Arch of
Agony. Dawnstar could have escape easily as the locals didn't have aircraft
but rather than abandon the groundbound Brainiac 5 she surrendered.

Luckily for the Legionaires Jhordan had some clout in the priesthood as
well as being strong enough to survive the infection so by renouncing the
heresy of welcoming the offworlders he managed to change their sentence to
exile and pass one of the ancient computer disks that served as holy relics
and might reveal the truth about Kol to Brainac 5.

Heartbroken, Dawnstar returned to the Legion where she broke Wildfire's
metaphorical heart by telling him she had met someone else and vowed to
return despite the locals wishes and United Planets declaration of a
quarantine zone around the planet. If she ever kept that vow I have no idea,
as I said Legion continuity started getting very muddled in the late eighties
so retroactively none of this may ever have happened.
That's it for Dawnstar, the next Legionairess to get in-depth coverage will be
Shadow Lass.
